Search engines relations 2009 (update)

Because of the many responses to our german post about the search engine relations in Germany, here comes the post in english (chart will be available in an english version soon)

Search engines are connected to each other. Market leader Google, for example, provides sponsored listings and organic search results to large German portals like T-Online, web.de or GMX. Also on board: Media portals like RTL, N24 or Bild.

Other major players in the German-speaking web only use Google AdWords for sponsored listings. Among them are ebay, Amazon and Süddeutsche Zeitung. This quite complex network works according to the motto “you scratch my back and I´ll scratch yours“. While other portals don’t have to wonder about search algorithm or the like, Google can keep on increasing its influence of the markets, because an important part of the search requests are from T-Online or AOL.

But, apart from Google´s market power, a network did also arise , albeit in a simpler way. Yahoo provides the search results to the prehistoric AltaVista and Fireball, as well as to the TV sender RTL II. But a glance at the Yahoo Search Marketing is more interesting. As Yahoo not only provides sponsored listings to Arcor, but to Bing, too. As part of an agreement between Microsoft and Yahoo one must reckon in the near future time that Bing will provide the search results to Yahoo.

Since 2007 luna-park analyses regularly the relations between search engines, directories and websites with each other and publishes the results.
